Henry Mills
Character History:
Henry Mills has lived a strange life. A somewhat lonely boy, he was adopted at a young age by the mayor of Storybrooke, Maine. A single woman named Regina Mills. He grew up in the little town of Storybrooke with most of the population knowing him and his name, and he observed all of them over the years, but even according to his Teacher, Mary Margaret Blanchard, Henry had a hard time making friends.
He didn't quite start putting together the pieces of his strange life, until she gave him a book. A very special book of fairytales. While Mary Margaret thought that this book would give Henry the hope he needed in his life, she was not aware of just how precious and vital a gift she had given the young boy. Because unbeknownst to her, this particular book of fairytales wasn't just any book. It was a compilation of the stories of the people in his very town. The people of Storybrooke. And though they did not remember their past lives, the clever, young boy quickly began putting together the truth.
He became convinced that the pictures that so closely resembled his friends and neighbors weren't just coincidences. These people really were the characters in his book, and none of them could remember their lives. Not so long as the curse that had made them forget and brought them to this land remained over Storybrooke.
In his book, he learned that the person responsible for this curse was the Evil Queen. A woman who looked an awful lot like his adoptive mother. And this realization sparked Henry to seek out his biological mother, Emma Swan, so that she might help break the curse and give the people of Storybrooke back their memories.
So, resourceful young boy that Henry is, he borrowed one of his teacher's credit cards to search for Emma online, and then traveled all the way from Storybrooke to Boston, alone. There he meets Emma at her apartment and tells her he is her son.
A long car-ride back to Storybrooke and a series of 'unfortunate' events later, and Emma ends up staying in Storybrooke, much to Henry's satisfaction. With his mother and adoptive mother at odds, Henry had to get creative to keep finding ways to visit with Emma. While she was Henry's biological mother, she didn't technically have rights to Henry, and his mother wasn't going to make it any easier on Emma, either. The two developed a secret system as Henry's 'delusions' and strange insistence that Emma was the one to break the curse continued to anger Regina and get Henry to do a number of dangerous things out of certainty they were plots by Regina to cover up the truth. Such as blowing up the old mines so no one could go down there. A plan that nearly got Henry and Archie both killed when the young boy snuck down there to get a look.
He also went to creative lengths to try and get David, a comatose hospital patient, and Mary Margaret together. According to his book, they were Emma's parents, Snow White and Prince Charming. Making them his grandparents and destined to be together. However, Regina attempted to thwart these efforts at every possible turn.
Henry kept a walkie talkie so he could keep in touch with Emma, and met with her at his secret 'castle' hideout (an old playground set) whenever he could get away. And though Emma didn't believe in the curse, to an extent she humored Henry, and did show real concern as the two became closer. But it was Henry's adamant persistence that eventually got through to her. (Well, that and a poisoned apple turnover.) Near desperate for Emma to believe him, Henry took a bite out of a cursed apple turnover intended for Emma, to prove to her that magic was real. Not even hesitating a moment thanks to his certainty that she would find a way to break the curse.
After Emma broke the curse on Henry, and the one on Storybrooke, Henry was reunited with his mother and grandparents, and the whole of Storybrooke regained their memories. Unfortunately, with this, they all also regained their memories of Regina and everything she had done to them.
The happiness of the broken curse doesn't last long, when the Storybrooke residents lead a mob to Regina's house and Henry has to beg Emma to help him stop them. Emma does save Regina, but in the process, she and Mary Margaret are whisked off to the Land of Magic, leaving Henry in Storybrooke with David, Regina and the others.
Upset with his mother for everything she has done, he calls her an evil queen and leaves to live with David, refusing to see her until Emma and Mary Margaret return.
However, when Regina regains her powers and uses them to attack the townspeople, Henry decides to go home with her, to make her stop. Once their, she traps him in the house with a barrier spell. She offers to teach Henry magic, but furious with her and hurt by everything that has happened, Henry refuses.
Later, after David breaks in to find Henry, Regina allows them both to leave.
It's during this time away from Regina that Henry begins trying to find a way to get Emma and Mary Margaret back, helping the people of Storybrooke reunite with their lost loved ones in the process by helping both Marco and Jefferson reunite with their children. He then tricks Regina into leaving her house to go meet him, only to go and steal the keys to her vault so he can try to find magic to save them.
Later, with the help of a necklace given to him by Mr. Gold, Henry is able to communicate with the other people in the nightmares he has begun to have, eventually talking to Aurora and finding out that Emma and Mary Margaret are with her and need help.
After convincing Regina to have faith in Emma and Mary Margaret and seeing her remove a curse from the well they might come back through, Henry begins to trust Regina again and thanks her, doubly happy now that his lost mother and grandmother have returned. This trust waivers in and out through the rest of the series, with misconceptions on both ends.
Later, Henry travels to Manhattan with Mr. Gold and Emma, where they meet his father. Emma's previous lie that Henry's father was a dead firefighter causes the meeting to go over badly, and the trust between Emma and Henry fractures a little.
The more the problems faced by the people of Storybrooke lead them to consider violence as an answer, the more frustrated Henry becomes. He tells them that they used to be heroes and that bloodshed isn't a heroes way to solve things. Still, it is Henry who tries to blow up the wishing well to get rid of magic, saying he thinks the magic is corrupting everyone and ruining everything.
Regina's constant insistence on revenge against the rest of Storybrooke upset Henry, and in a moment of frightened anger, he tells her he could never love a person who does evil. But it is Henry who insists that Regina be given another chance, and that they not leave her behind when the fail-safe to the curse threatens to erase storybrooke and everyone in it. And Henry who encourages everyone to stay and help her.
Unfortunately, Henry is kidnapped during the chaos and thrown into a magic portal.
Abilities/Special Powers: Henry is an eleven year old boy. He has no powers or special abilities. Juse a whole lot of faith and persistence.
Third-Person Sample:
Henry wrapped his arms around his knees on the bench, staring at the phone he had found in his pocket and smoothing his fingers over it. Everything had gone so strange and hectic. One minute he was with his friends and family and the next he was being dragged away, pulled into a portal to another place, another world. It would have been exciting if it had been other circumstances. If it had been Emma he was exploring other worlds with and not his kidnappers dragging him away from everything.
When he had woken up alone, he had been scared. But Henry was a tough little kid. He had swallowed his fear and tried to figure out what to do next. If this was another world, then all he had to do was find a way to get home. He could do that. It'd be his very own adventure. Hadn't he wanted to be the Hero?
He flipped the phone open, curiosity, for the moment, a distraction from anything else. And one he needed right now. He had been severed from his family, from his home, and sent far away all alone. That was a lot for any eleven year old. But he was also the boy who believed. The one who knew the real story, or at least, parts of the real stories of the people of Storybrooke. That was enough to make him believe he could do this. He would find a way home. And Emma had to be looking for him. He knew she would be. So whatever happened, he would find his family again.
He just had to take that first step into his own story.
First-Person Sample:
[Henry was a well-read boy. He had read his book of fairytales in and out, every comic he could get his hands on, and many many books besides. His room was full of books and comics. But waking up alone in the garden, with the knowledge of other worlds he had? It didn't take long for Henry to guess which world the portal dropped him in. At least, he was pretty sure he knew after wandering around a bit. It was just the phone throwing him off. Did they have phones in Wonderland? Was it safe to use it? What if the Queen heard him and cut off his head?]
Hello? Can anyone hear me?
[He had to be brave like David would be. He didn't have a sword but he was fast and small. There were places he could hide.]
...Can someone tell me... is this Wonderland?
[If Jefferson couldn't find a way to escape Wonderland, how was he going to? Mirrors? Would they work?]
